Nudge FAQs

What is Nudge at RIT College of Art and Design?

Nudge is a compliance tool that prompts individuals to manually install macOS updates from System Settings/System Preferences.

How does Nudge work?

The application launches on a schedule determined by various components within the application. Upon presentation, you can acknowledge your understanding and defer the update to a later time. After a predetermined number of deferrals, Nudge will no longer permit further deferrals. In this instance, you will be required to apply the update; therefore, it is advisable to plan accordingly.

What are the advantages of using Nudge?

By employing Nudge, CAD Tech proactively ensures that CAD devices adhere to RIT’s Computer Security Standard. macOS updates are frequently overlooked, and end users may be unaware of their mandatory installation. This tool presents this crucial information to the user until they apply the necessary update.

When are we deploying Nudge?

Nudge is currently undergoing testing and will be gradually deployed to small testing groups before being rolled out college-wide. During the testing and initial deployment phases, we anticipate the need for some configuration adjustments.

I’ve received the error “Your disk does not have enough free space”

This message is displayed because your device lacks sufficient free disk space. To resolve this issue, please free up disk space to a minimum of 100 GB or more. This can be achieved by removing user data from your home directory.

Nudge application suggests an update, but System Preferences/System Settings does not indicate that one is available

When this happens we recommend that you reboot your computer and retry the update process. Should the latest release remain unavailable, kindly contact CAD Tech Help Desk for immediate assistance.

How do I opt-out of Nudge?

We are deploying Nudge to align CAD with the RIT security standards. The importance of security patches and updates is a requirement by all RIT employees regardless of their impact on your day to day operation. If you have a concern with this change, we ask you submit a ticket to CAD Tech Help Desk requesting a possible opt-out.
